2016 Franchise Player Cost & Rules

Every year certain questions arise so here are the answers:

1. Only veteran players with expired contracts who have been previously signed to a contract for three consecutive years with the same team can be franchised.
2. Franchise eligibility, the three consecutive years, does NOT travel with a traded player unless at least three years are left on that player's contract.
3. A player can not be franchised more than once by a team. (The unlikely exception would be if a franchised player was traded and then later reacquired with three years remaining on his assumed contract.)
4. You must franchise a player before you trade him or he will be considered an unrestricted free agent.
5. You can only franchise one player per year. A franchise player counts against the two player maximum of tenderable players.
6. Franchise players are announced by the team on the Cut Down date.
7. Franchise players must be signed to a new contract on the Cut Down Date.
8. Salaries are determined by the average of the top 5 salaries at the respective position.
9. You can't reduce a player's salary by franchising him. If his base salary is greater than the franchise cost, the base salary will be used. Players who play more than one position will be assigned the highest relevant salary.

2016 Franchise Player Costs (for comparison purposes, 2015 cost is in parenthesis)

QB - $10.0m - ($10.0m)
RB - $8.4m - ($7.5m)
WR - $9.0m - ($9.9m)
TE/HB - $5.7m - ($5.2m)
OT - $7.9m - ($8.3m)
OG - $6.3m - ($7.1m)
C - $5.3m - ($5.4m)

DT - $5.7m - ($6.7m)
DE - $7.0 - ($7.9m)
OLB - $6.0m - ($7.3m)
ILB - $4.9m - ($7.0m)
CB - $6.5m - ($6.0m)
S - $6.9m - ($6.7m)

P, K - $1.6m - ($0.8m)

From Rule 14.6: The franchised player gets a salary equal to the average of the five highest paid players at his position, according to KRFL salaries. If that averaged salary is lower than his previous year's salary, the previous year's salary will be used instead. If the player is carded at multiple positions, the position that has the highest average will be used. The salary average for the five highest paid players per position will be calculated after the FA draft from the previous season. A franchised player must be given a new contract at the time of the Franchise tag designation and rejoins the team as a veteran.
